Play Review: Wicked - Gregory Maguire

by Kelsey

Have you ever wondered how the whole story of the Wizard of Oz began? How the Wicked witch of the West became so wicked? How Galinda became the "nice" witch of the East? Most of your questions will be answered if you read the book, or listen to the music of...WICKED!!!!!

The basic outline of the story deals with the beginnings of the whole "land of oz" thing and tells the tale of the two girls before they became who they are now. Elphaba was given her name because the author of the Wizard of OZ has the initials L.F.B. - Elphaba. Elphaba and Galinda started out as friends when they went to school, and later on in life went their separate ways. That is when they began to lead different lifestyles and befriend different people.

The whole story in all is wonderful and it ties together a lot of loose ends that the book The Wizard of OZ really doesn't describe. If you ever have the chance, try to read the book or listen to the Broadway soundtrack for the musical. They are both extremely good, and as always--it's time to try defying gravity!
