Book Review: The Game of Sunken Places (M.T. Anderson)

By Liesl P.

If you like the movie Jumanji, or if you are partial to science fiction/fantasy this is the book for you. The Game of Sunken Places is about two boys going to visit the one boy’s uncle—a man who is eccentric and lives in a very creepy mansion surrounded by a forest. The forest is also creepy. Whenever someone ventures into the woods, he or she is never seen or heard from again, or at least not alive anyway. When the boys get to the mansion, they find a game board called “The Game of Sunken Places.” As they wander around the house, they find more and more pieces to this game. After awhile, they learn that they are the pawns of the game and they must win in order to live. M.T. Anderson creates a spellbinding tale of two best friends playing a game of life or death.
